It's a multi-platform media world out there: Are you ready?

As you all know, we established a new program of mini-courses in the Park School this year, taught by our wonderful faculty in their areas of expertise.

The goal of that program is to be sure that ALL Park students have the opportunity to develop skills and understandings across all media types and platforms -- even those that are not a part of their own Park degree programs.

Here's an example of that kind of opportunity: No matter what your career goals, the ability to shoot and edit video -- on deadline -- is the kind of skill that could make YOU a better candidate for that job or internship than everybody else in that candidate pool.

I can't think of a better way to spend a few Friday afternoons than developing a competitive edge.

Can you?

The details:

Adrift (2009, 12 mins, 16mm)
directed by Cathy Crane
Ithaca College professor Cathy Lee Crane's Adrift is a poetic adaptation of the fountain of youth fable, following a woman who has come to Rome to die. On her journey through the city's fountains, she encounters a young girl who taunts her with visions of lost innocence. This film was staged on locations from the Roman films of Pier Paolo Pasolini, includes an original score by composer Ben Kamen, and a cameo from Cornell alum, dancer Michael Somersel.

Cathy will be on hand to talk about her work following the screening.

Adrift will be shown with

Touched by Water (2006, 46 mins, Canada)
directed by Tamas Wormer
Touched by Water is a documentary that dives into the lush world of bathing. From the holiest rituals to fashionable leisure, from ancient Roman baths and elite European spas, via Turkish hammams and ritual dips in the Ganges, to high-tech, modern swimming pools, the film looks at bathing cultures around the world and explores our essential bond with water, the sensual pleasure we derive from it as well as the spiritual renewal. "Shot in 13 countries over the course of 10 years, the exquisite Touched by Water is both an ode to the social ritual of public bathing and a thought-provoking look at water's spiritual significance. From Christian baptism to Muslim prayer ablutions, most key ceremonial rites of passage involve water." (Patricia Bailey, cbc.ca) more at artesianfilms.com

HELP!

I get this kind of request pretty frequently (and now that I'm posting this one, I expect to get some more!), which is why a group of students (led by Eddie Lemonier)is working on a project called ICFusion, which will become a central online database of all of the resources on campus that could contribute to your projects.

But in the meantime:

This just in from Josh Weiner (TVR, '09):

Sam Robinson and I are looking for students to fill technical positions for a live-to-tape television show for Sam's video workshop program. The positions that need to be filled are:

Audio (set up mics, and run studio mixer)
Lighting
Still Store/Chryon
Cameras
Assistant Director
Floor Manager

We'll train students for the positions if necessary.

You can email Josh or Sam and volunteer (their contact info is in the IC directory).

Ed2010 (And NO, it's NOT “Eee-dee two zero one zero.”)

This just in from Danielle Paccione, a Parkie who is one of five journalism majors whohave just started a new campus chapter of Ed2010, an organization for magazine editor wannabes:
Calling all magazine editor wannabes! Ed2010 has come to Ithaca!

"Ed2010 is a community of young magazine editors and magazine-editor wannabes who want to learn more about the industry so we can fulfill our dreams of landing top editing and writing positions in the magazine industry. Ed was born in New York City, but we now have chapters in cities across the U.S., Canada, and in the UK." -Ed2010.com

The IC chapter of Ed2010 was just launched by five journalism majors who spotted the need for a professional networking organization for aspiring magazine writers and editors.

We're excited to start connecting with local editors and rubbing elbows with NYC editors. We'll be designing programs to bring magazine head honchos to campus so we can learn about the editorial process, the freelancing life, the "biz" side, how to think like an editor, and the best insider tips on internship/job searching to reach your dream magazine job.

Wanna be in the loop?

Shoot the president, Allison Musante, an e-mail (amusant1@ithaca.ed) and she'll put you on our e-mail list as Ed2010 gets up and running.

One last thing...
"It’s Ed (as in the dude’s name) 2010 (as in twenty-ten). So please stop saying
“Eee-dee two zero one zero.” It’s Ed’s biggest pet peeve. Alrighty then." -

Interested in a career in sports media? Here's an opportunity that could MAKE your career......

Everybody knows how competitive sports media can be....

And everybody knows that the way to get that first big job is to have had a really great internship for really great people who care about your success.

Voila! Here's exactly that kind of opportunity:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- owned by one of our alum -- has established an internship specifically for our students. Meaning you.

There are two of them every year: one in the summer, and one in the fall (during the football season!).

Interns will live and work in Tampa, either during the summer (easier to figure out in terms of your schedule) or the fall (a little more challenging, but we can help -- and it's football season!).

It's a new program, and we understand that it must seem a little daunting to figure out the logistics (and the credits). But every year, we have a number of students who devote an entire semester to a full-time internship experience, and we find a way to make it happen for them (without disrupting their graduation plans and schedule).

In this case, we may also be able to help with housing and travel expenses so you can AFFORD to go to Tampa for a couple of months and complete an internship.

In other words, if you're interested in a career in sports media -- whether working for the networks, or ESPN, or a professional sports team -- this is the opportunity of a lifetime.

And if you apply and are accepted, we can help you make it happen.

Interested (really: how could you NOT be interested?)?

Submit a cover letter and resume to the dean's office through April Johanns, External Relations Coordinator, 379 Park Hall or ajohanns@ithaca.edu. DEADLINE IS Feb. 26 -- which is next THURSDAY.

Finalists for the position will be required to interview in person in Tampa, FL.

Park ROCKS: Vancouver 2010, here we come!

Here it is: the announcement so many of you have been waiting for:

The Park School is once again one of only a very small number (latest estimate is THREE) schools in the entire country at which NBC Sports will be recruiting for interns for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Here's what we know (watch this space for more information as it becomes available):

-- The Olympics will take place in February 2010. Interns will be required to travel to Vancouver in January and will return to campus early in March.

-- Just as we did two years ago, the Park School will work with all of the students who are accepted into the program to ensure that they will stay on track for graduation. Last time, we created special courses specifically for the interns, beginning upon their return to campus in March; that's an option again this time.

-- NBC Sports will be on campus for interviews late in March; the exact dates haven't been determined, but we'll keep you posted.

-- Applications are available NOW in the Dean's Office. They MUST be submitted to the Dean's Office by 5 p.m. March 9. NO EXCEPTIONS.

-- Students currently off campus can apply; you can contact April Johanns, who will email you the application, and we will conduct interviews via Skype or iChat.

-- While the Park School will work closely with NBC Sports to coordinate and organize the interviews, and will work closely with our students who go to Vancouver, NBC Sports makes all decisions regarding selection of interns. I think you ALL should get to go; unfortunately, it's not up to me.

Again, we'll share information as it comes in: watch this space!

Calling ALL Juniors! You planning to graduate next year? You SURE?

Juniors only (everybody else can just skip this one):

EDITORIAL NOTE: Thank you VERY MUCH to the reader who reminded me that this process is also a REQUIREMENT for seniors who plan to graduate in December. I knew that - but forgot to mention it in my earlier posting. So all of this applies to current seniors planning to graduate in December 2009, too (thanks again!).

OK, guys: You're about ready to register for classes for your last (final. done. terminal. you get the idea) year of studies at Ithaca College.

You're about to become a senior.

That means you and those who love you are probably assuming that one year from May -- as in May, 2010 -- you will be donning those black robes and marching across campus to pick up that diploma (well, at least you'll be receiving the case that will eventually hold your diploma, once it's confirmed that you've finished all your courses, passed them, and actually completed your degree).

And that is the point of this blog posting (yes, yes, I'm getting to it...hang in there with me).

Here's the thing:

Every year (and I do mean EVERY YEAR), we have what we kindly call the "senior problem list."

That's a collection of the names of the students who somewhere along the way got confused, lazy or just plain silly and didn't enroll in the courses they needed to get that diploma. (Most of them, as it turns out, are those students who never found the time to go see their advisers....go figure.)

Sometimes, we don't find out about those problems until it's too late to fix them. That's a huge hassle for everybody, and a staggering disappointment for family members who have already booked their hotels for graduation weekend (can you imagine having to make one of those phone calls home? Me, either....)

To avoid that problem going forward, we've instituted this year something called the REQUIRED (yes, that means you. Every one of you) JUNIOR AUDIT.

And it has nothing to do with your taxes.

You have recently received an email saying that you MUST fill out a form that confirms that you know which courses you need to take to graduate, and that you know which semesters those courses will be offered (that info is on Homer) - that you have a plan that will ensure your graduation on time.

You can figure that out on your own. OR (and I would recommend this step), you can go to see your adviser BEFORE registration for the fall semester and figure it out together.

But in any case, you need to turn that form in to the Dean's Office -- to Tracy Frenyea, our advising coordinator -- by March 6. Failure to do so could result in all kinds of problems, including a freeze on your registration for the fall.

Questions? Contact Tracy (tfrenyea@ithaca.edu), or stop by our office on the third floor of Park to see her.

See you on graduation day! (And before that, too, of course....)

It's all about the story....and this story is all about the doorknob...

Sometimes, it's easy to let all of the flash and sparkle of expensive equipment and sophisticated technique get in the way of what really matters when you're making a film: it's always about the story.

And even so, there's really no new story under the sun; it's just about how you tell it.

That's the premise of one of the oldest and most revered traditions in the history of the Park School. Started by beloved former Professor Skip Landen back in the 1970s, the "doorknob film" was for many (many) years an assignment given to ALL of the school's film students. It was pretty simple: Make a short (very short) film that presents the most imaginative way to kill somebody with a doorknob.

Yup, you got that right: A doorknob. And you needed to kill somebody with it.

Everybody made one, and at the end of the year, the school held a huge Doorknob Film screening, at which the very best film received the highly coveted Golden Doorknob Award.

Some of the school's most successful and accomplished alumni were Golden Doorknob Award winners -- and they will still tell you that with real pride. It was an honor and an achievement.

And so, in honor of Skip and in keeping with the school's longstanding celebration of really great stories, the Park School this year is reinstating the Golden Doorknob Award. Thanks to a donor's gift, we will this spring present three cash prizes for the best doorknob films, as well as a special prize just for work produced by first-year students.

Here are the details:

Prizes Include:

1st Place: $3,000
2nd Place: $2,000
3rd Place $1,000
The Parkie 100 Knob Award: $500.00*
Honorable Mention: Movie tickets and other prizes

* The Parkie 100 Knob Award prize is open to any Park student or team of students who have not yet enrolled in a Park production class higher than the 100 level. Please indicate your current or most recent production class completed on the entry form if you wish your entry to be considered for this prize. Your entry will automatically be entered in the overall competition as well, but will be judged only against other 100 level Park students for the $500 prize.

Golden Doorknob Rules:

1. Open to all Ithaca College Students.

2. Films must explore the ways in which one might encounter death involving a doorknob. An expansive interpretation is encouraged--the fatal moment might be delivered by knob or door directly or indirectly and could also be an open door that tells of death in the future. Let your imagination run wild! The films are narrative (tell a story) and must have a beginning, middle and end but must not exceed 5 minutes in length. There is no minimal length.

3. May be live action or animation and may be shot on film, digital or made by a software effects program such as Flash.

4. The deadline for submitting films is April 3, 2009. Winners will be announced in April, 2009. Two copies of the completed project must be submitted by DVD to Steve Gordon, Park 373, by the deadline date.

5. Films will be judged by a panel of faculty and industry members.

6. The Park School reserves the right to use films for promotional purposes, in perpetuity. Copyright of each film will belong the filmmakers. Each filmmaker must submit approved clearance forms for actors or copyrighted material appearing in the film.

You can find the entry form right here.

Winners will be announced mid-April.

It doesn't happen very often that.....

....you meet somebody who makes a real difference in your life.

Someone who inspires you, who reminds you of all of the great qualities you aspire to being and becoming as a person:

Kindness.

Thoughtfulness.

Wisdom.

Leadership.

One of those people in my life is Peggy Williams, the former president of Ithaca College and a woman who has been my mentor, my role model, and my friend.

This weekend, Peggy was honored by the American Council on Education's Office of Women in Higher Education with the Donna Shavlik Award, a national award given to someone who has been a prominent leader in women's leadership and career development.

I couldn't make it, I'm so sorry to say: too many other obligations closer to home. But a contingent of students, faculty and administrators made the trip to Washington, D.C. to be with Peggy and to celebrate her accomplishments and her contributions.

Here are a few photos of that special evening: wish we were there!

Peggy: Even thought we couldn't all be there to see you recognized, it's nice to know the rest of the world appreciates you as much as we do!

Rolling Stone's Chief Political Reporter Speaks at IC (thanks to the Park School's Center for Independent Journalism!)

(Image from Mother Jones, http://www.motherjones.com/news/qa/2005/04/taibbi_265x312.jpg)

Matt Taibbi, the chief political reporter for “Rolling Stone” magazine, will discuss “Independent Journalism Amidst Conformist Media” at 7 p.m. Monday in Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall.

His talk, which is sponsored by Ithaca College’s Park Center for Independent Media (PCIM), is free and open to the public.

Taibbi will also speak in classes and meet with students during his campus visit.

Often compared to Hunter S. Thompson, Taibbi (pronounced tie-‘ee-bee) swept onto the national scene with his critical yet entertaining reporting on the 2004 presidential campaign, which resulted in the acclaimed book “Spanking the Donkey: On the Campaign Trail with the Democrats.” His most recent book, “The Great Derangement: A Terrifying True Story of War, Politics & Religion at the Twilight of the American Empire,” is an irreverent and illuminating portrait of America at the end of the Bush era.

“Matt Taibbi is at once one of the most serious — and funniest — journalists of our time,” says Jeff Cohen, PCIM’s director. “He’s adept at revealing the inner workings of Congress and our political system, as well as the insides of largely ignored social movements and subcultures. He’s embedded himself with troops in Iraq, survivors of Katrina and religious fundamentalists.”

A believer in experiential (sometimes undercover) reporting, Taibbi has traveled far and wide in search of a good story. He played professional baseball in Russia and Uzbekistan (where he was the starting outfielder on the national team), and pro basketball in Mongolia. After working as a sports editor for the “Moscow Times,” he co-founded the “The eXile,” a newspaper mixing outrageous commentary and investigative reporting aimed at Moscow’s expatriate community. He later started the satirical biweekly “The Beast” in Buffalo, and served as a columnist for the “New York Press.”

Now occupying the politics desk at “Rolling Stone” once held by P.J. O’Rourke and Hunter S. Thompson, Taibbi earned the National Magazine Award for commentary in 2008. He also contributed to coverage of the 2008 presidential campaign for HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.”

Located within Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications, the Park Center for Independent Media is a national center for the study of media outlets that create and distribute content outside traditional corporate systems and news organizations.

Now Hear This! WICB is rockin'!

So have you had a chance to check out WICB since you got back to campus? It's looking (and sounding) great this semester -- from its awesome Web site to lots of new programming (and now, for the first time (?), the chance to date a DJ!).

For starters, take a minute to tune into the new talk-and-opinion program, "Now Hear This!"produced by Rob Engelsman, Tucker Ives, and David Reynolds. Here's the description:

A news-magazine show chronicling the issues and people of Tompkins County, "Now Hear This!" picks up where "NewsWatch" and "ICB Sunday" leave off, diving deeper into the story than ever before. Featuring weekly segments on business and entertainment, as well as a special guest editorial and a question of the week, "Now Hear This!" is a solid half hour of news TV and an hour of newsy radio.

And the coolest thing about the show -- in addition to Rob, Tucker and Dave, of course -- is that it's "cross-platform." Meaning convergent. Meaning the same content on radio AND television (WICB AND ICTV!).

Meaning programming for a digital age, where it's all about the content instead of the medium. (You can catch the show on WICB on Thursdays at 8 p.m., and on ICTV on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 9 p.m.)

The second, and much-less-cool thing about the show is that they let me do an editorial for the debut....and given that I have always been a woman with an opinion, I of course was delighted to participate.

In keeping with that cross-platform concept, I thought I'd at least share that part of the program with you, right here, online:

So here 'tis....

When I was a kid, my grandmother used to talk in platitudes,

Simple statements of what I believed were profound truths:

You end up where you’re headed, she used to say,
So you better know where you’re going.

There’s a difference between investing and spending, she’d tell me.
You spend for the moment.
You invest for the future.

And – one of my favorites, even to this day:

The glass is half full, instead of half empty.

And with every challenge comes an opportunity.

That’s a lesson,
And a piece of advice
That is more important today
Than it has been …

Well, since my grandmother used to say it.

That’s because we’re facing
A perfect storm
of economic and political challenges

And we are forced to confront

Perhaps for the first time
In MY lifetime

A world in which the United States of America
Is no longer the biggest,
The best,
Or the only game in town.

A high school counselor in Colorado produced a video
Highlighting some of those changes….

Did you know, for example,

That the number one English speaking country in the world is….. CHINA;

That India has more honor students
Than the United States has students?

That the top ten jobs this year
Didn’t exist in 2003?

And that today’s college grads
Will have between 10 and 14 jobs
By the time they are 38?

Did you know
That the first commercial text message was sent in December 1992
And that the total number of text messages that will be sent today
Exceeds the total population of the entire planet?

Did you know that

If MySpace were a country,
It would be the fifth largest in the world,

And that,
by next year,
90 percent of all science and technology grads in the world
will live in Asia?

In short,
We’re living in a world
in which Americans are no longer the smartest,
the richest,
the most powerful
or even the most wired

(Bermuda is, in fact, the #1 ranked country for broadband penetration;
The United States is 19th.)

And all of that said,
Americans are still among the most industrious,
Ambitious, and
Stubborn people on earth –

Not to mention the most optimistic.

And that means that –
Just like my grandmother –

we recognize
That with challenge
Comes opportunity….

And that 2009 may bring us some of the
Greatest opportunities
Of our lifetimes.

But
That means
It’s time for us to stop complaining about what we aren’t doing,
And start doing what we can do.

It’s time for us to decide
Once and for all
That business as usual
Will no longer suffice.

One of my favorite quotations that
DIDN’T come from my grandmother

Came from somebody who
Was almost as smart as she was:
Albert Einstein.

We can’t solve problems
by using the same kind of thinking
we used
when we created them,
he said.

And he was right:
As we rise to the challenges that confront us,
As we figure out how to do more with less,
As we reclaim our position as the greatest and most productive nation in the world,

It’s time for new kinds of thinking.
Not only across the country,
not only across the state,
But right here
On South Hill.

You do end up where you’re headed, as grandma used to say.
And if we’re as smart and effective as I think we are,
We’re headed into a future that is as bright, promising and exciting as our history has always been.

We’ll just need
To work a little harder,
Think a little more creatively,
And stay focused on our core mission,
core values, and core vision
to get us there.
