So, do YOU go to the theater? Tell a fellow Parkie all about it....

I know you're swamped (me, too), but surely you have 3 minutes (2 minutes?) to help out a fellow Parkie.

Scott Pollack, an IMC major, is working as an intern at State Theater, and he's doing some research about what kinds of college kids (you?) go to the theater -- and what kinds of shows you would go see if you're not going to the theater now.

He's written a short (VERY SHORT) survey and he would SO appreciate your taking the time to fill it out.

All you have to do is click HERE and answer the questions. It'll only take 2 minutes. OK, maybe 3.

And you know Scott would do it for you.....

The Legacy of Rod Serling: The Twilight Zone is Coming to Park!

This just in from the Serling Conference Committee:

“The Life and Legacy of Rod Serling,” an academic conference hosted by the Park School with the cooperation and assistance of the Theatre Arts Department and the Ithaca College Library Archives, is set for Friday and Saturday, March 28-29, on the campus.

Students may register and pay to attend all the events but there will be several sessions that will not require paying registration, including the Twilight Zone Marathon Friday evening—a repeat of a successful event last April. Come watch some
of the best of the Twilight Zone series episodes.

On Saturday, a cast under the direction of Assistant Professor Jeffrey Tangeman, will present a table read of “Noon on Doomsday,” a never-before-produced script written by Serling and based largely on the tragic murder of Emmett Till, 14, a Chicago youth who was killed in Mississippi in August 1955. His death gave momentum and direction to the growing Civil Rights movement in the United States.

You can find more information on the conference here. www.ithaca.edu/rhp/serling.

Helpingcoordinate this year’s conference are Professors Ari Kissiloff (Strategic Communication) and Barbara Audet (Journalism). Feel free to ask them about it.

"....descriptions of films that you may never see but wish you could...."

This just in from the Los Angeles Times, a review of the new book by (editors) Karen Ishizuka and the Park School's own Dr. Patty Zimmermann (congrats, Patty!):

LOS ANGELES MAGAZINE, March 2008, Review by Robert Ito

Ishizuka and Zimmermann/MINING THE HOME MOVIE
"Screen Savers: A New Anthology Ponders the home movie

In 1998, Karen Ishizuka, an L.A.-based writer, curator, and
documentary producer, organized an international symposium at the
Getty Center examining, of all things, home movies. While fellow
scholars heard of her plan and thought only of birthday parties and
Yosemite trips, Ishizuka saw the films as a way of recovering lost
histories. The anthology 'Mining the Home Movie: Excavations in
Histories and Memories' (UC Press, 333 pages, $25), edited by
Ishizuka and film professor Patricia Zimmerman(n), grew out of that
symposium. In a film discussed in the book, a Belgian couple
conceals two Jewish children from the Nazis. In another, Japanese
American Boy Scouts wave U.S. flags in a Wyoming internment camp. As
Ishizuka notes, the movies are often the sole records of peoples and
stories that would otherwise go undocumented; the groundbreaking
essays intrigue with descriptions of films that you may never see
but wish you could."

Strongest Ever takes top awards....

Parkies Jacqueline Willemsen, Chris Lavigne, Colleen Evanson and (Professor) Ben Crane have been working for a couple of years on Strongest Ever, a documentary film about Becca Swanson, the world's strongest woman.

And it's all starting to pay off.

The film was just named the Audience Choice Award at the 2008 Omaha Film Festival.

It won the Providence Grand Prize at the Rhode Island International Film Festival
(scroll almost to the bottom):
http://www.film-festival.org/awards07.php

And (Ben has just informed me),the film is "selling like hotcakes." It's been on the distribution market for only a short time, and it has already been purchased by national networks in France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Proof positive that talent, commitment, persistence and a little (OK, a lot) of help from a dedicated faculty member/mentor can produce great results. (And maybe even some real income from all those distribution deals...)

Honor Your Honor Society...and spiff (yes, it's a word) up your wardrobe!

How's that for snazzy? And wouldn't you look....well, snazzy wearing one?

Yes, you would.

And in addition to improving your wardrobe, you'd also be supporting a (very) worth cause: Lambda Pi Eta, the Communications Honor Society. (You're all honorable, but the Lambda Pi Eta Society is the organization for students whose leadership, academic
performance and service activities warrant a more formal recognition of that status.)

Here's the info:
Lambda Pi Eta, Ithaca College's communications honor society, is hosting a t-shirt fundraiser in February and March. The t-shirts feature a logo designed by one of your fellow Park students (Fred Kennedy!) during our logo contest. Shirts are white, long-sleeve, and have a small logo on the front left and a large logo on the back of the shirt.

Shirts will go for $15 (such a deal) with cash or a check payable to Ithaca College.
They'll be in the lobby Monday, February 25th- Friday, March 7th 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Now really: What better way to spend $15 AND help out your fellow Parkies AND add something snazzy to your wardrobe?

Can't think of one....

Beloved Comm Prof Howard Cogan passed away Saturday

Howard Cogan, beloved professor and mentor of hundreds -- if not thousands -- of communication students at Ithaca College, passed away Saturday after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Howard's obituary was published today in the Ithaca Journal; his funeral services were held this afternoon. A memorial service is tentatively planned for a later date at the college.

In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests a donation to Temple Beth El (tbeithaca.org or 607-273-5775), the Franziska Racker Centers (rackercenters.org or 607-272-5891), the Alzheimer's Association of Central New York (alz.org/centralnewyork or 607-330-1647), or the Howard and Helen Cogan AdLab Fund at Ithaca College (Ithaca.edu or 607-274-3260).

The LAST lobby post...

So the students out in LA asked me to post some photos of the lobby floor; they've heard it's crazy (it is! hurrah!).

So here they are (and if you're the person who emailed me to say we shouldn't be spending your tuition money to make the lobby look pretty, we're not, I promise):

Home again, home again....

We got back at about 2 a.m. this morning after spending a whole week in LA, hanging out at the Center (those folks are SO GREAT), visiting alumni, and attending one of the Capital Campaign celebrations (it's almost over, and we ARE going to make our goal of $115 million, I just know it...who can believe THAT?!? Congrats to everybody who worked so hard to make it happen, especially VP Shelley Semmler and her staff over in Alumni Hall...what a long and interesting road it's been, but they made it...and we all win as a result.)

It was a busy week -- lots of time in the car (only some of which was spent actually moving forward) and lots of meetings at great restaurants. I won't fall into the old routine of complaining about the traffic, but who in the world could do that every day? They say you get used to it. They say it's not so bad. They say you just have to know when to drive and when to wait.

I say I spent a lot of time in the car, only some of which was spent actually moving forward.

But I did manage to arrive at my various destinations, which means I met with Cliff Plumer, Chief Technology Officer of Digital Domain (they're working on Speed Racer these days...); Rodd Perry, CEO and co-President of The Ant Farm; Barbara Palmer, marketing executive; Carol Serling, wife of television legend Rod Serling; and Bob Iger, CEO of Disney.

To name a few...

These are all very busy people. They're all involved in major media projects, from film and television to advertising and special effects. And they all wanted to talk about the same thing: You. And the Park School. And Ithaca College.

They all wanted to hear about your work, and your successes, and the ways we're working to ensure you have lots of both.

It was inspiring and confirming, all at the same time. And I'm glad to be home to get back to work so we have more great stories to tell next time I'm out there (or you are....)

Seniors: They're counting the days...and in need of a mentor

You can always identify the seniors in the Park School: They're the ones who know exactly how many days it is until graduation.

That's not because they're frantic to get out of college.

It's because they're eager to head out into the world and get their dream jobs (well, the jobs that will eventually lead to their dream jobs...)

And we want to help.

That's why the Park School is starting a new Alumni Mentoring Program designed to match a senior with an alum in his/her professional area of interest.

It's a brand new program, a pilot project that we'll use to figure out whether it can work for the entire class. We're starting small and will build it in the years to come. And we're working with some of our most successful and engaged alumni, all of whom are really excited about the program.

Here's how it's going to work:

April Johanns is coordinating it. If you have questions (after reading this AND the email we sent seniors yesterday), you can contact her.

It's a seniors-only program (you'll get your chance when you're a senior).

Seniors will be selected to participate in the program through an application process that includes recommendations from faculty and/or staff. You got the forms in that email yesterday; if you accidentally deleted it, you can get the forms from April.

If you are selected, the Dean's Office will match you up with an alumni mentor.

If you are selected, you will be REQUIRED to attend 3 workshops designed by Park and the Office of Career Services.

If you cannot attend these workshops, you cannot participate in the program (sorry, no exceptions).

If you're in LA, we'll videoconference the workshops so you can still attend.

Here are the workshop topics, dates and times:
Thursday, March 6, 6:00pm, Park 220 - Resume/Cover Letter Workshop (students must come prepared with resume and generic cover letter)
Thursday, April 3, 6:00pm, Location TBA - The Art of Interviewing
Thursday, April 10, 6:00pm, Park 220 - Professional Networking

You'll meet with your mentor by phone for one hour a month (February, March, April and maybe May) to discuss those topics.

We're taking the program very seriously; we're asking some very busy people to commit to giving you a pretty good chunk of their time. Failure to meet any of the requirements of the program -- a workshop or a phone call -- will result in dismissal from the program (just so you know).

We're hoping this will be an efficient and effective way to provide our students with the opportunity to connect directly with a successful professional who cares about their success, and who can give them some practical and invaluable advice about getting that dream job (OK, the job that will lead to that dream job....)

It's 70 degrees in LA....and the Price is Right

....Just ask me: I'm sitting in my apartment at Oakwood, looking out the window at the parking lot outside the X building (at least some of you must know what that looks like), and the sun is shining and the breeze is blowing, and I understand why so many of you plead to come to the LA program in the spring.

That said, it's snowing in Ithaca, and I LOVE IT when it snows in Ithaca. So I would be just as happy at home as I am here (guess I'm just a happy kind of person....)

I've been to the Center for the past two days and I have seen ONE student (ONE). Everybody else is out at their internships during the day, and the crew at the Center says they're having the time of their lives.

A group of them went to the Price is Right on Monday, and just WAIT until you find out what happened to a Parkie there. I can't tell, unfortunately, because she signed a nondisclosure agreement that says we can't tell. But it's going to be on PRIME TIME, and this is one student who will be returning to the Park School in style....(more on that when I know when the show will be airing....)

I spent yesterday visiting alumni and friends of the school -- it's pretty fun to walk into a major studio and ask to see the guy in charge -- and tonight is the college's Capital Campaign party. Tomorrow I'm scheduled to see Bob Iger, our friend at Disney, who must be in a pretty good mood now that the writers' strike is over. I'll tell him you all want a job.

And Saturday I'm home again...and looking forward to it.

In the meantime, have a great week in the Park School. Enjoy the snow. And happy Valentine's Day.

The American Advertising Federation's Most Promising Minority Student Program was held at the NY Athletic Club this week and included industry immersions at Young & Rubicam Brands, New York Times, ESPN, and McCann-Erickson Advertising.

Only 50 students in the nation achieved this Finalist award. [They all got tickets courtesy of Publicis to see Hairspray Thursday evening on Broadway.]

Nicole LeReau is interviewing with several advertising agencies while in NYC. Sally Lok, another IC award winner, was hired in LA by MTV, a sponsor, so she couldn't attend.

(Gee, what a great reason to miss a party...).

CONGRATULATIONS to these amazing Parkies, who once again prove we're the best and the brightest, and to Professor Scott Hamula, who once again proves that great faculty can inspire great students.

Reggie Simmons Memorial Award: Two Parkies Off to Africa

Jeff Goodwin (TVR) and Jen Nevins (Journalism) have been selected as this year's recipients of the Reggie Simmons Memorial Award, established by alumn Bob Iger in honor of his lifelong friend (and fellow IC grad), Reginald Simmons.

Simmons dedicated his life to service work in Africa, and the award therefore provides the opportunity for two Park students each year to spend six weeks in Africa during the summer, working with a service organization called Operation Crossroads Africa.

One of last year's winners, Michelle Diemer (CMD), returned home and launched a fundraising effort to buy the books to fill the library she helped build in a small African village. We managed to put the necessary resources together (thanks for your help!) and she'll be returning to Gambia after graduation to help distribute the books.

Jeff and Jen will work with the folks at Operation Crossroads to determine which country and which program will work best for them this summer.

Congratulations Jeff and Jen!

Ever smelled burning popcorn? Eeeeeewwwwww

There are a few smells worse than burnt popcorn, none of which I care to describe here. But it's the burning popcorn smell that poured down the hallways in Park late this afternoon, after a particular student (who shall remain nameless) managed to torch a bag of microwave popcorn in a particular corner of the Park School (that shall remain nameless) and voila!

Firetrucks!

I, of course, was up in my office doing email (what else?) when the fire alarms started to blare out in the hallways. That happened a few weeks ago, and I was the last one out of the building (yes, it's true, my entire staff hightailed it out of the dean's office and nobody bothered to knock on my door to be sure I'd heard the alarm...should I be taking that personally?).

So this time, I jumped up and trotted down the stairs and out the door, where a bunch of students were shivering in the cold (at least it wasn't raining...). It didn't take long before we were allowed to reenter the building...and then the alarms went off again (smoke: it's hard to get rid of...).

Long story, anticlimactic ending. After everybody huddled for a few more shivery minutes on the sidewalk, the fire guys opened the doors and the students went back to their business as usual. The firetrucks went away and the student who started the whole thing went back to his media, having learned the lesson the hard way:

It doesn't take five minutes to pop popcorn. No matter what it says on the bag.

So you might have noticed....

....that there's a new link on the VIC Web site: The Executive Staff.

That's because earlier this week, I went looking for the names of the folks who are running the station this semester (I was urging you all to log on and tune in and hear what great work they're doing....) and I couldn't find it. Like anywhere.

Now I can. And so can you.

But in case you aren't going to get around to it anytime soon (hey, we're all busy....) here 'tis:

Station Manager............... Elisabeth Komito
Program Director.............. Michael Sokol
Talent Coordinator............ Rebecca Murphy
Asst. Talent Coordinator...... Marissa Muscoreil

And they said it couldn't be done....

Who SAYS it's hard to find a job?

Ask Dan Cassavaugh, who graduated about 15 minutes ago (OK, so it was December) as a journalism major and "almost immediately" -- those are his words, "almost immediately" -- landed a job as a sportswriter for the Watertown Daily Times. He covers all the high school and college sports in the North Country (SUNY Canton, Potsdam, Clarkson, St. Lawrence University).

Dan started at the newspaper in mid-January. Here's his first story (way to go, Dan!)

EARLY ARRIVAL: SAINTS' LUCAS SHINES
DANIEL J. CASSAVAUGH
TIMES SPORTSWRITER
Tuesday, January 22, 2008
ST. REGIS FALLS — Thirty minutes before tip-off, St. Regis Falls sophomore guard Krista Lucas laughs with teammates, maybe does a dance, and loosens up everyone else. When warm-ups start, the laughs slowly turn into jitters. In the huddle before the tip, Lucas is just plain nervous. No one notices in the crowd come tip time, however.

"As soon as I walk on the court it all goes away," Lucas said.

That's because Lucas is likely the most prepared girls basketball player on the court.

She spends countless hours with her brother and father outside, in the driveway, working on her ballhandling, her left hand and her jump shot. Winter weather doesn't faze her, either, as she works outside all year long.

"It's cold," Lucas said. "But it's worth it."

Her work ethic and her passion for basketball earned her a starting spot for St. Regis Falls in eighth grade. She is the youngest basketball player to ever start for head coach Wilbur Bailey in his 25 years of coaching.

"I couldn't believe how much more advanced she was," Bailey said. "Her whole knowledge of the game was just very surprising for a girl that young."

In her first full season, Lucas averaged more than 10 points per game and has improved that mark every year.

"I work at it a lot," she said. "As much as I can."

Her determination to get better has paid off as this season she leads the Saints in points and assists per game, with 17.2 and 3.4, respectively. Her points production ranks her third in all of Section 10.

With 632 career points and still five regular-season games left this year, Lucas is poised to break the 1,000-point mark before her senior season.

Across the board, Lucas's statistics are among the best in Section 10. She leads the league in rebounds, blocked shots and 3-pointers per game with 9.8, 3.4, and 2.1, respectively. She is also the only player so far this season to score at least 32 points. She did it twice.

"Her skill level is unbelievable," Bailey said.

It isn't all about her, according to Lucas, who says she just enjoys being part of the team and making sure everyone else gets involved. Sometimes her unselfish attitude on the court forces Bailey to step in.

"Sometimes I tell her, 'You've got to shoot the ball,'" he said. "She's always looking for the open person."

Not only does she produce on the court, but in the classroom she is equally as talented. Lucas maintains an A average in high school and plans to continue her education and her play at the next level.

"A dream would be to play for Duke or North Carolina," Lucas said. "I want to go as far as I can."

Coach Bailey has high hopes, too.

"It's up to her what she does," he said. "I know she can go on and play in college."

Three years ago, she was an unknown eighth-grader from a school district comprised of 321 total students and a seven-player varsity girls basketball team. Today, Lucas is a highly respected threat on both sides of the ball.

"I think everybody in this league wishes they had one of her," Bailey said.

For now, Lucas is happy shooting free throws by the light on her garage in 10-degree weather.

"I just have a passion for the game," she said.
